Culper Ring to Cyber Rings: Spies, Surveillance, and the American Experiment

An in-person event at the
University of Nevada, Reno, Joe Crowley Student Union
Tuesday, May 19

As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, this forum uses history as a lens to help students understand the modern world they are inheriting. From secret codes and invisible ink used during the American Revolution to today’s satellites, facial recognition, and social media tracking, surveillance has long played a role in national security—and sparked debate.

Today, however, surveillance operates at an unprecedented scale. Every app download, post, search, and “like” contributes to a digital footprint that can shape opportunities, safety, and privacy. This forum challenges students to think critically about that reality.

Carrying the spirit of civil discourse forward, YSF students will contribute to restoring a civil and respectful society at home, laying the foundation for a more peaceful and secure world.

The Annual Youth Security Forum (YSF) event brings students together from Washoe County School District (WCSD) high schools to engage in spirited and civil discussions about timely and challenging national security issues. In collaboration with the University of Nevada, Reno’s Department of History, the National Security Forum of Nevada, and WCSD is hosting the 2026 YSF to equip the next generation of national security leaders and informed citizens with the tools, outlook, and motivation to discuss timely and important topics with their peers, families, and communities. Civil discourse is a pillar of our national security. Bridging divisions at home strengthens our standing abroad. This year, YSF students will unpack 250 years of American history, examining how surveillance shapes freedom, security, and their role in a democratic society.
