The National Security Forum’s Youth Security Forum
Hosted annually, the Youth Security Forum (YSF) is an NSF educational program designed to deepen high school students’ understanding of critical national security issues. Each year focuses on a timely theme, such as artificial intelligence or the Russo-Ukrainian War, and invites students, after guided classroom preparation, to join peers from across the Washoe County School District for a one-day, curated forum. The NSF collaborates with local and national organizations, the Washoe County School District, and the University of Nevada, Reno to deliver a meaningful and well-supported experience for over 350 students.
YSF equips students to become informed and engaged citizens by connecting classroom learning with real-world security challenges. Through expert perspectives and facilitated discussions, students strengthen critical thinking and media literacy skills, gain insight into complex global issues, and are inspired to explore future roles in civic and public service leadership.
Students leave the Youth Security Forum with:
- A deeper understanding of national and global security topics that shape their world, and why they matter
- Increased critical thinking skills to analyze complex issues
- Improved ability to evaluate sources and understand different perspectives
- More confidence in discussion and collaboration with peers through structured civil discourse and collaborative problem-solving
- A clearer understanding of how national security connects to their lives and an increased sense of civic responsibility
- Inspiration to explore pathways in public service, policy, international affairs, or related fields

YSF would not be possible without your help!
Volunteering – Each year, the NSF seeks 40-50 volunteers to facilitate discussions at discussion tables and/or support event logistics. Volunteers are provided with coffee and snacks in the morning and lunch in the afternoon. Preparation materials and a training video will be given to volunteers ahead of the event. Interested in volunteering? Sign up here!
Sponsorship – Sponsorship plays a vital role in keeping the Youth Security Forum accessible, impactful, and sustainable. Contributions from community members and partners cover essential program needs–from event materials and venue support to catering, and student resources–allowing the event to remain free for schools and open to a diverse group of students. By supporting YSF, sponsors help empower the next generation of informed citizens and emerging leaders, reflecting a shared commitment to education, civic engagement, and the long-term security of our community.
For more information regarding sponsorship and donations, please visit our YSF Donations page or email info@nationalsecurityforum.org to connect with an NSF representative. Thank you for your support!
