NSF is honored to have two esteemed general officers join us to share their perspectives on national security challenges from the vantage point of nearly four decades of service in the U.S. Air Force. Gen Lori Robinson and Gen David Robinson served our country at times of peace, war, terrorism, the rise and fall of democratic and authoritarian regimes, and domestic turmoil. Their remarkable careers and commitment to keeping our country safe, allows them to look over the horizon at national security challenges facing the U.S. in 2022 and beyond. This event will be off the record. That places the burden of discretion upon all attendees! This will be a broad overview of what these two officers knew and know today, rather than speculation about this or that current administration policy.

General Lori Robinson is one of very few women in the U.S. military to reach the rank of “four-star.” When she was in uniform, she was the most senior woman in the Department of Defense. As the first woman to serve as a combatant commander, for both U.S. NORTHCOM and NORAD, Gen Robinson blazed a trail in the air and on the ground. Her husband Major General Robinson was a career fighter and instructor pilot who also flew combat missions. Together, they have seen the U.S. military evolve in response to a myriad of threats from nation states, non-state actors, and international and domestic extremist groups.

The Generals Robinson will discuss their remarkable careers and insights on national security matters during this casual “fireside chat” format. You are invited to travel with them as they pilot us through a range of issues from the role of U.S. alliances, the rise of China, conflict and new alliances in the Middle East, Vladimir Putin’s antics and aggressions, a renewal of authoritarianism, and the impacts of climate change on national security.

Biographies

General Lori Robinson (USAF-Retired) served as commander of the United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) and commander of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) from May 2016 to May 2018. She was the first female officer in the history of the United States Armed Forces to command a major Unified Combatant Command. She now serves as a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution. Gen Robinson also served in a variety of positions as an Air Battle Manager, including instructor and Commander of the Command and Control Operations Division at the Air Force Fighter Weapons School, and Chief of Tactics in the 965th Airborne Warning and Control Squadron. She commanded an operations group, a training wing, an air control wing and deployed as Vice Commander of the 405th Air Expeditionary Wing, leading more than 2,000 Airmen flying the B-1 Lancer, KC-135 Stratotanker and E-3 Sentry aircraft in operations ENDURING and IRAQI FREEDOM. General Robinson served at the Pentagon as Director of the Secretary of the Air Force and Chief of Staff of the Air Force Executive Action Group.

Major General David Robinson (USAF-Retired) served as the mobilization assistant to the Chief of the Air Force Reserve, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C. A career fighter and instructor pilot, he also flew combat support missions in the KC-135R during Operation Deny Flight. General Robinson was a member of and squadron operations officer for the USAF Air Demonstration Squadron, the Thunderbirds.  He was also a squadron commander and a wing vice commander. He held key staff assignments at the Joint Staff and Secretary of the Air Force levels. The general also served a tour as the Director of the Combined Air Operations Center, Prince Sultan Air Base, Saudi Arabia.
