Follow Up: Hansen’s Talk on US Dependence on Strategic Nuclear Weapons

Former National Intelligence Officer for Strategic Forces and Proliferation, Keith Hansen, provided a stimulating and comprehensive overview of US nuclear posture as it has evolved. He also directed attention to the nuclear arsenals held by our allies and adversaries.

In his excellent discussion, Keith raised the question regarding the desirability of reducing global nuclear arsenals to “zero”. While not advocating a position, Hansen laid out the pros and cons of various force-level alternatives. A key point he made was that stability should be the primary objective, asking the audience to consider whether a lower number—including zero—brought more or less stability.
