INVESTING IN VIETNAM TODAY–THE OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES

With David Henry, Managing Director, Vina Capital Group

Gold and Silver, Tuesday, January 5, 9:00 am

Over the past 20 years Vietnam has made a shift from a centrally planned economy to a “Socialist-oriented market economy”. The Vietnamese economy has experienced rapid growth–almost 8% last year. Vietnam today is integrating into world’s economy, and is in transition from a planned economy to a market-oriented mixed economy. Vietnam has been rising as a leading agricultural exporter and as an attractive foreign investment destination.

This shift to a market-oriented economy followed 15 years of political intolerance, stifling economic policies, and frequent wars and conflicts with its neighbors. As a result, Vietnam was near the bottom in terms of GDP growth and national productivity. That has changed significantly and David Henry will discuss the current political and economic situation in Vietnam, then will highlight market opportunities there. David will talk specifically about his VinaCapital Group, where he oversees more than $1.8 billion in investments in real estate and other development projects in “Nam”.

David Henry spent more than 30 years in the real estate business in his native Australia before assuming responsibilities for VCG’s Asian investments.

Prior to David’s talk, Steve Metcalf, USMA ’69, who fought in Vietnam and later lived in the region while working in corporate finance, will provide a brief overview of Vietnam’s evolution from the collapse of South Vietnam in 1975 to the political rejuvenation (Doi Moi) of the 1990’s.

A continental; breakfast will be served ($10 for the talk and breakfast). Please RSVP (acceptances only!) to this email or by calling 746-3222. Note that we are back at the G&S for this one.
