Take a deep breath and hold on tight, this is going to be a challenging year for the United States and the world. With deference to the 1982 film of the same name, our program is aptly named “The Year of Living Dangerously.” Precarious and perilous security situations are abundant across the globe.

As we near the one-year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the United States our NATO allies, and much of the world has been both horrified by ongoing brutality of the Russian assault and inspired by the resilience of President Zelensky, Ukrainian warfighters, and most notably, the Ukrainian people.

The explosion in a warehouse in the port of Beirut occurred barely half a mile from the densely populated center of the city with its many affluent residential and office neighborhoods. For 6 years, the warehouse stored the highly combustible compound “ammonium nitrate.
